The commemorative coin of Ukraine minted in 2005 is dedicated to the famous Fair at Sorochyntsi held in Poltava’s region of the country since old times. The annual event is mentioned in the book of short stories “Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka” by Mykola Gogol. Gogol is the XIX century classic of literature, who was of Ukrainian descent and upbringing. His early works, despite they were written in Russian, are based on Ukrainian traditions and folklore of the period. The picturesque image of the Fair of Sorochyntsi is placed on the reverse of the collectible 5-hryvnia coin, its name in Ukrainian is placed in the upper part of the picture. The obverse of the piece is decorated in the same manner as well. The central part of the coin is occupied by the relief image of Gogol writing his stories and his character beekeeper Panko-the-Redhaired, who is the narrator in “Evenings…” The coin’s denomination and the name of the issuing country are placed there too.
