Ukraine 1 hryvnia, Archangel Michael, silver coin, 2011

The silver proof 1-hryvnia coin launched in Ukraine in 2011 bears the image of Archangel Michael or, as he is often called by Orthodox Christian Church, Taxiarch Archangel Michael. The rank “Taxiarch” means the Archangel is the leader of Heavenly host of angels. Archangel Michael is usually depicted armed, mostly with sword or spear, sometimes his images show him fighting with dragon or devil. So, the Archangel Michael is very respected by Christians, as the defender and guardian of military particularly. The effigy of Archangel is placed on the reverse of the coin; he is dressed like a warrior raising his sword. The Ukrainian semicircular inscription along the rim of the coin means “For us and the souls of the righteous and the power of Taxiarch Michael” (the line from Taras Shevchenko’s poem “Haidamaky”). The obverse shows the Bank of Ukraine Coat of Arms in octagonal frame and the monetary denomination. There is the name of the government bank and the issuing year minted also.
