Ukraine 1 hryvnia, Archangel Michael, silver coin, 2012

The commemorative silver coin of Ukraine issued in 2012 has the denomination of 1 hryvnia. The piece was coined by the Mint of the National Bank of the country in uncirculated quality for collecting and investment purposes. Archangel Michael is the subject of the coin and it’s not a random choice: the saint is the holy patron of Ukraine and its capital city Kyiv. The Eastern Orthodox Church greatly venerates Michael and calls him by the title of “Archistrategos” which means he is the main commander of the Heavenly Hosts. Thus the saint usually is depicted armed with a sword or a spear and a shield. So is he on the reverse of the 1-hryvnia silver coin. The relief figure of Michael is placed on the smooth surface; the surrounding inscription in Ukrainian is the related to the Archistrategos Michael line taken from the epic poem of Taras Shevchenko “Haidamaky”. The obverse of the coin bears the big emblem of the Ukrainian National Bank in the octagonal frame in the center.
